Allergy Evaluation & Treatment – Understand Your Triggers

Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances that are usually harmless to most people. Depending on the trigger, allergic reactions can affect the nose and respiratory passages and may interfere with sleep, concentration, and everyday comfort. Dr. Titiksha K. Bisure has specialised training in allergy diagnosis and immunotherapy and provides evaluation for allergic rhinitis and related allergy concerns.

Common Allergy-Related Symptoms

Allergy symptoms can vary between individuals and may include:

  • Repeated sneezing.

  • Runny or blocked nose.

  • Itching in the nose or throat.

  • Watery or itchy eyes.

  • Symptoms that recur during particular seasons or environments.

  • Nasal discomfort associated with exposure to suspected triggers.

Allergic rhinitis is a common condition involving inflammation of the nasal lining in response to allergens. Common triggers may include dust mites, pollen, mould, or animal allergens, although the relevant triggers differ from person to person.

Allergy Evaluation & Testing

Identifying possible triggers is an important part of allergy management. Assessment generally begins with a discussion of symptoms, their frequency, environmental exposure, and relevant medical history.

Depending on the clinical findings, evaluation may include:

  • Review of symptoms and suspected allergy triggers.

  • Examination of the nose and upper respiratory passages.

  • Allergy testing when indicated.

  • Skin prick testing to assess reactions to selected allergens.

  • Evaluation for allergic rhinitis and related nasal symptoms.

Test results must be interpreted alongside the patient’s history and symptoms. A positive allergy test does not automatically mean that the tested substance is responsible for every symptom.

Allergy Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to the identified triggers, symptom severity, and individual health needs. Options may include:

  • Trigger Management: Identifying and reducing exposure to relevant allergens where practical.

  • Medical Management: Appropriate medication to help control symptoms, as recommended by the treating clinician.

  • Nasal Symptom Management: Treatment directed at congestion, sneezing, and other symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

  • Allergy Immunotherapy: A specialised treatment that may be considered for selected patients after appropriate evaluation.

Allergy immunotherapy requires careful patient selection and a clinician-directed plan. It is not necessary or suitable for every person with allergies.

When Should You Consult an Allergy Specialist?

Consider specialist evaluation if sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, or a runny nose persists, repeatedly returns, or affects your daily activities despite routine measures.

Seek emergency medical help if an allergic reaction causes difficulty breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or other signs of a severe reaction.
